ABOUT ABOUT

No Good Sister is a female vocal trio out of Philadelphia, PA.

In the Fall of 2012, a mom, a teacher, and a waitress, decided to turn their mutual admiration for each other’s music, writing and voices into a musical project that would both showcase them as individuals, but especially highlight their deep affinity for tight 3-part harmonies.

Meaghan Kyle, originally from Columbia, MD, got her musical roots from the great American songbook. At 16, she began a career as a professional theatre actress, but upon moving to Philadelphia nearly 8 years ago, she quickly found herself immersed in the thriving Philly music scene. While regularly singing back up vocals for singer-songwriters Shane Dodd and Christie Lenee, Meaghan joined up with the fine folks that make up the old-timey gypsy jazz folk group, A Fistful of Sugar. Enter Jess McDowell.

Originally from Newtown, PA, Jess McDowell cut her musical teeth at an early age by hopping from bluegrass festival to bluegrass festival, absorbing all the traditions of the Americana repertoire. She has performed as a backing vocalist for Brad Hinton, was half of the Philly folk duo Jessie James, and fronts her own vintage country band, The Wounded Healers. Jess joined A Fistful of Sugar a year into its course, where she first met Meaghan.

A musical bond was quickly formed, and they craved a project with a little more blues, a little more roots, and one that would have them up front. And with a third female voice. Enter Maren Sharrow.

Sharrow began her music career singing back-up vocals for several bands in her hometown of Detroit, MI, where she wrote the songs for her debut solo EP, Pretty Mess, released in 2006 to critical acclaim. Sharrow was featured on NPR’s Open Mic, and The Detroit Metro Times praised the songstress for her “angel wings and fearie breath,” calling her the “Patty Griffin of the D.” In 2008, Sharrow moved to Philadelphia to pursue her love of music. Now a stay-at-home-mom of two boys under the age of three, Sharrow fits in writing sessions between naptimes and after the boys go to bed. Maren is also getting ready to head in to the studio with her side project, The Scarlett Rebellion, to record their debut album Hollow Hearts which will be released sometime late in 2014.

Since the formation of No Good Sister, just over a year ago, they have performed at World Cafe Live, both in Philadelphia and Wilmington, The Tin Angel, Fergie’s Pub, The Fire, Underground Arts, Milkboy Philly, Ortliebs, Silk City to name a few, and appear regularly in the Four Seasons Lounge. In January of 2014, they were selected by World Cafe Live at The Queen as the Unsung Hearo standout performer of 2013, and won a slot in Hearo.fm’s 2014 SXSW showcase. They are currently recording their original music and will be releasing their first EP by year’s end.”
